Exploring the Potential of Chatbots and ChatGPT in Enhancing Vocabulary Knowledge

Abstract

This chapter presents an in-depth analysis of chatbots and the integration of ChatGPT into vocabulary acquisition. The chapter begins with an introduction to artificial intelligence (AI) and continues with a definition of chatbots to highlight their role as computer programs designed to mimic human interaction. It subsequently focuses on the use of chatbots in language education. The potential benefits associated with the integration of chatbots into language learning environments are further explored. However, special attention is dedicated to the use of chatbots in vocabulary teaching, which is a fundamental aspect of language acquisition. The chapter also explores the use of ChatGPT, an AI-powered language model, particularly in the context of teaching vocabulary. The chapter ends with highlighting how ChatGPT can help learners master word form, meaning and usage, based on Nation's multidimensional aspects of vocabulary knowledge.
