Enhancing Outcomes, Fostering Values, and Shaping Pedagogy With ChatGPT in English Learning Courses

Abstract

Through a value-oriented framework, this chapter explores uses of the AI chatbot, ChatGPT, to enhance student learning outcomes, foster individual student values, and promote the harmony between both of these. This exploration occurs via practitioner research of two projects given in two courses. The practitioner research is value-oriented in that its focus is on the use of ChatGPT to foster these values of course outcomes and individual student values. The courses and research occurred from fall semester 2022 to spring semester 2023 in a university in eastern Türkiye. The discussion in the chapter works to advance an understanding of AI's potential use in the development of innovative pedagogical strategies that cater to diverse learner values in order to enhance learning outcomes, promote learner values, and add to the repository of evidence-based practices and case studies implementing AI in language education that can serve as part of the foundation for further research and language teaching experimentation.
