Abstract

Finnish secondary school students have performed well academically because the curriculum prioritises cognitive and non-cognitive developments through well-defined curricular and co-curricular activities. A happy learning experience and a rich value system also contribute to the success of Finnish education, which prioritises quality over control and competition. Students' happiness and socio-emotional well-being are at the core of the Finnish curriculum. The OECD identifies a common school system for all, collective school responsibility for struggling learners, and a climate of trust between educators and the community as contributing to this excellence. Although it has some limitations, the Finnish education system stands out among many other systems in advanced countries worldwide. It has a solid historical context that has transformed Finland's education system into a powerhouse, known as the “Finnish way” in Sahlberg's argument.
