Abstract

This chapter discusses the way that organizations react to large-scale external racial events by engaging in reputational management but not systemic change. The death of George Floyd in 2020 sparked national outrage and protests and a surge of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. These initiatives are reactive and short-sighted, seeking to fix a problem rather than change an organization systemically. The authors use their own personal stories to discuss this pattern and make recommendations for adaptive systems change that engage their own staff meaningfully.
