Abstract

In this chapter, a model to design and implement an effective VLE is proposed using a critical review of existing models and synthesizing these into a reference framework for a higher education institution. A method to align the learning design with the learning analytics (LA) system is also investigated. The various aspects that need to be considered in learning effectiveness are explained before ending the chapter with a synopsis of VLE models. Various models and frameworks exist that guide the design and implementation of VLEs. For this study, a model is required to guide the implementation of a VLE to provide effective learning and teaching in the higher education institution. A model to ensure effective VLE design is established based on the Piccoli model, which describes the human and design dimensions of the VLE. The human, design, and learning effectiveness dimension of effective VLE implementation are aligned to contemporary LA models. The chapter ends with a summary of prevailing criteria to measure the effectiveness of the VLE.
