Abstract
In certain industries, to conduct the inspection of construction such as storage tankers (big volume), bridge bars, ship hulls, or other heavy infrastructure, inspectors often need to climb up at high altitude, or slip into limited space. Due to the hazardous conditions (elevated temperature and presence of pollution), this type of operation is hard to achieve, or simply not accessible. Moreover, the inspectors are unable to conduct the operation with a high level of accuracy and productivity. Recent achievements in the study and design of robotic systems have encouraged the application of magnetic climbing wheeled robots to conduct many tasks instead of physical labor from humans. This chapter introduces the design process of the wheeled climbing robot for the welding inspection in shipbuilding industry.
