Abstract

The process of applying water to the soil artificially by means of systems such as pumps, tubes, sprays, pipes is called irrigation. As irrigation plays a vital role in the growth of plants or cultivating species to satisfy the basic needs of human beings, it is necessary to manage it in a proper way. Usually, irrigation is done at the regions which are subjected to irregular rain or dry or drought prone areas in order to manage the crop yield along with the consideration of quality. Since the mode of applying the water in a uniform manner is the main task in irrigation, several irrigation systems are adopted. The growth of the agricultural crops, maintaining landscapes, reducing weeds, and also to regenerate the disturbed soils in dry areas or also during the season of less rainfall are dependent on irrigation for their prosperity. Hence, in this chapter, the authors detail the background of irrigation, how it impacts the crop yield and demand, smart technologies available, growth analysis, and intelligent and smart irrigation systems with its benefits and necessities.
