Abstract

Developing engaging learning environments for the benefit of all learners is a challenge for online programs. Research has shown that online learning environments are not designed to engage Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) for value that they bring to academic programs. Walden University and the master's in education (MSED) program have created foundational areas that can be used to create equitable learning environments. Arroyo and Gasman's 2014 model of Historically Black College and Universities' (HBCUs) student support provides a strong plan for institutions to change practices in support of BIPOC and other marginalized communities. Building on the activities of the revised core courses in the MSED program, and using the HBCU-inspired framework and recommendations from external reviewer, a case study is considered. This case study suggests an institution can build an online experience that is inclusive and supports the work of BIPOC and other marginalized communities.
