Abstract

In recent years, cannabis has been one of the substances that many countries around the world have taken or are taking steps to legalise for certain kinds of consumption. In some countries, it is only legal in certain parts and still illegal in others. There is literature to suggest that idea of legalising cannabis tends to divide opinion with some people being for its legalisation and others being against it. The reason for the division of opinion regarding the legalisation of cannabis can be traced back to the many challenges and benefits that stem from cannabis being legal in any given society. There is sparse literature addressing the contextual dynamics of these resulting challenges and benefits. In this chapter, the authors present a commentary of some of the challenges and benefits that may result from the legalisation of cannabis in South Africa.
