Abstract

Nanowires are a class of smart materials with unique physicochemical properties owing to their electron confinement along their thickness which differs them from their bulk counterparts. Their enhanced physical, chemical, optical, and mechanical properties have heightened their suitability for a host of sensing applications. The profound sensitivity underlines their preferential applications in lighting, computing, communication, energy harvesting, and medicine for detecting and analyzing signals and molecules with a relative greater efficiency. Advanced synthesis methods have been developed to engineer the properties of nanowires for tailored sensing applications. In this chapter, captured various synthesis techniques and potential sensing applications of nanowires underpinned by their unique properties. The chapter output will enlighten recent advances in nanowires and its subsequent sensing technologies utilized in healthcare, environment, and electronic devices. Consequently, the concepts are expected to open vistas in allied nanomaterials and sensing technology development.
