Abstract
The information technology industry is transforming organisations in unprecedented ways. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in most organisations having to convert to virtual offices. This transformation has promoted e-leadership in organisations as a means and style of management. To explore e-leadership, this chapter focuses on its concepts, competencies, and challenges. A systematic literature review was conducted involving 331 journal articles, of which 21 were explored in greater depth. The chapter provides a valuable insight into e-leadership practice. It argues that new e-leadership challenges arising from modern ICTs urgently require further research, especially in e-trust, work-life balance, and psychological contracts between management and workers. E-competencies need to be developed together with the ability to manage emotions to overcome challenges in virtual environments that did not exist in the ‘face-to-face' world.
