Abstract

The current study investigates the dark side of using gaming chat applications for illegal activities like selling credentials, stolen credit cards, private data, sexual exploitation, and organizing groups on white supremacy. With the shutdown of many Darknet websites and illegal marketplaces, criminals are now switching to chat platforms that allow them to resume their operations easily and quickly. In addition, such communities can be utilized for recruitment and for providing instructions on how to commit crimes to individuals anywhere in the world. The study is grounded in social learning theory, as it explains how crime is learned through interactions on these applications. The goal of the current work is to explore further these platforms and to provide law enforcement with guidance and recommendations on how to integrate digital forensic tools more effectively and efficiently for investigating data generated on gaming chat platforms and preventing future crimes facilitated through these platforms.
