Abstract
Identity is multifaceted, complex, and may change over time. Identity develops as a person cultivates a sense of self in relation to society's culture and norms; it is the continuity of those beliefs about self over time, the formation of personal values and goals, and the ability to form connection of self to purpose in the greater society. Self-awareness and reflection reveal complex and multifaceted issues of intersectionality and support the formation of identity development, and are incubators for the development of civility, where discourse, positive interactions, and social change occur. In application, the model of influence provides a framework to help participants answer the question “Who are you?” as it relates to race and identity. Engagement in identity awareness activities supports development of multicultural competencies grounded in awareness of one's attitudes and beliefs, knowledge of culture, and application of culturally appropriate skills and action.
