Enhancing the Physical and Mental Activity of the Elderly in India

Abstract

Ageing population is the most significant phenomenon of the 21st century. The significant development in the field of healthcare has resulted in higher life expectancy. Many bodily functions deteriorate with age leading to changes in body structure and a rise in fat with time. Low physical activity due to ageing has a deep impact on the health of the elderly in India. The objective of this study is to develop a design-based solution to encourage the elderly to engage in regular physical activities in order to achieve healthy ageing. Data were collected from the elderly population (N=29) through personal and telephonic interviews residing across 7 different cities in India. The participants had reduced physical activity due to low motivation, loneliness, and social exclusion. An exergaming solution was developed by using a user-centered design approach, and Octalysis framework. User feedback was taken for the high-fidelity prototype of the developed solution. It is expected that the designed solution would enhance a long-term positive impact on their physical and mental health.
