Abstract
In this chapter, we discuss the potential of biological functional grading to provide guidance to an integrated tribological solution. The discussion is facilitated through a detailed analysis of the structure and function of selective species of legless reptiles. Thus, we start by considering surface-subsurface property customization within the chosen reptile and discuss how such customization closely relates to optimizing the locomotion function of the reptile. To this end, we detail the targeted functional aspects of the surface substructure, and how material property gradients interact with surface topographical features to maintain the structural integrity of the skin and reduce friction resistance.
