Abstract

The use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the oil and gas industry has steadily increased over the last decade. The focus of this chapter is understanding what type of external factors influence oil and gas firms to implement AI. A systematic review of the literature found that external pressures to achieve business goals and public pressures to reduce environmental impact continue to rise. This chapter leverages institutional theory to look at external isomorphic pressures in the form of government regulations and competitive pressures that influence the adoption of AI. The chapter concludes by reviewing opportunities for future research in the areas of AI within the oil and gas industry.
