Abstract

This chapter deconstructs assumptions and standards of Black hairstyles in professional settings. Using an intersectional perspective, the authors review Black hair, culture, and identity by examining how hair takes on multiple meanings and can be used to grant or deny access to employment opportunities. The authors explore influences on socially acceptable “professional” hair through a content analysis of articles and media by decoding language, narratives, and depictions of hair with the hope of supporting claims on the ways Black women experience and internalize external pressures to conform with whitewashed standards of professional and self-identity. Authors also highlight hair discrimination lawsuits to show the complexity of grooming decisions for Black women in professional settings. The chapter proceeds with discussion on the increased visibility of Black natural hair as a means of changing perceptions of professionalism narrative and concludes with equity-focused strategies.
