Care to Dance and Dance to Care

Abstract

This chapter reflects on the research supervisory experiences gained through dance-related research degree programmes at a technological university in Ireland. The chapter details the lessons for each supervisor arising from the “Some Dance to Remember: Exploring the Psychosocial Effects of the Introduction of an Adaptive Irish Céilí Dance Group Activity with People Living with Dementia and Their Carers” project completed in 2021. Building on these lessons, an interdisciplinary third level Special Purpose Award (SPA) education programme for social care and dance practitioners in Ireland is proposed. The benefits but limited use of dance as an activity in dementia management are outlined. The narrative of social care education and use of the body in dance/movement along with inclusivity in Irish dance education is explored. Reasons for reluctance among both social care and Irish dance practitioners to facilitate adaptive dance activities are suggested. The chapter concludes with commentary on the challenges in changing the current social care and Irish dance narratives.
