Walking the Talk

Abstract

This chapter presents a framework of six essential understandings for critical writing instruction using culturally sustaining pedagogy that teacher educators to prepare preservice teachers to teach writing. The chapter is organized into four sections: (1) a research-based discussion on critical literacy, critical language awareness, and culturally sustaining pedagogy; (2) an overview of the current reality of writing instruction in teacher preparation; (3) an explanation of a small set of essential understandings that can serve as the foundation for preparing preservice teachers through critical writing instruction using culturally sustaining pedagogy; and (4) concrete practices that teacher educators can use to walk the talk as they prepare preservice teachers to employ evidence-based practices while teaching writing in culturally sustaining ways.
