Abstract

Healthcare and cultural competency are intimately intertwined concepts. Understanding how to provide the latter when caring for patients translates to better care. Transitioning between cultures and overcoming linguistic barriers can be challenging for healthcare workers. Differences in cultural norms can often be the cause of irritation and discontent for both patients and healthcare professionals, impeding the ease with which we are able to communicate and connect with our patients. Insufficient education and training on culturally competent care for patients renders our healthcare team unprepared for the challenges faced when practicing in culturally diverse clinical environments. In this chapter, the authors will explore how medical interpretation is vital to the care of patients with limited English-speaking proficiency (LEP), how healthcare professional's beliefs can affect their practice, and how to navigate working with healthcare professionals of various cultural backgrounds.
