Abstract
The purpose of this chapter will be to highlight the experiences and challenges of queer collegiate student-athletes. With a growing number of student-athletes openly identifying as LGBTQIA+, it is important for higher education institutions to not only understand their unique experiences and challenges, but to also be proactive in ensuring their inclusion, safety, and support. Notably, queer and trans athletes continue to face a number of barriers to success in sport, including collegiate sport. To be sure, these barriers shape LGBTQIA+ college athletes' experiences on college campuses across the United States. Today, these barriers exist at both the policy level and the institutional level.
