Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of community engagement within higher education institutions and describes the process of applying for and receiving the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Community Engagement Classification. The author discusses the reasons for seeking the classification, reclassification, and clarification of the language used in the application process are discussed. The chapter also explores the importance of institutionalizing community engagement, the benefits that are received by the institution, faculty and students, and the challenges to institutionalizing community engagement. The author highlighted steps for institutionalizing community engagement within higher education institutions and pitfalls to avoid when trying to institutionalize community engagement within higher education institutions.
