Abstract
“I could have been a better Vice President to my President.” This was the realization a new President, who had previously served as a Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) shared with the authors shortly after his inauguration and months into his new role. Teaching, research, fundraising, and administrative experience are historically seen as being vital skills and experiences for a successful college presidency. However, traditionally “student affairs” functions complement the educational mission of an institution and can elevate the student experience—important skills and information for an effective president. Student affairs professionals often have their fingers on the pulse of campus life, which can be vital to the success of the institution. The student affairs perspective can be a unique lens from which an effective president can view the campus. Student affairs professionals need a campus president who provides student-focused leadership. In turn, the student affairs team can serve as an effective arm to achieve institutional goals and complement the academic mission.
