Abstract

This chapter explores the challenges and expectations imposed on queer international students in the U.S. by focusing on policies. These policies include those which influence queer international students' activities and choices before, during, and after U.S. education. There is a particular emphasis on students from the nearly 70 countries where LGBTQIA+ identities and behaviors are not broadly protected by the government, some of which send the largest number of international students to the United States, such as China, India, and South Korea. The goal of this chapter is to provide a survey of the impact of these policies on LGBTQ+ international students, towards the goal of improving responsibility, care, and awareness of working with this population in higher education. It concludes with concrete recommendations for future research and practice.
