Abstract

The concept of the metaverse is not new, as it dates back to 1992, but it is an interesting area that is receiving increased attention from researchers and marketers. This chapter provides insight into how the emerging virtual world of the metaverse is significantly enhancing the user experience in the gaming and entertainment industries by leveraging the latest technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain technology, NFT, and others. This chapter aims to provide insight into the current developments in metaverse entertainment and gaming applications and how they will affect our user experience in the future. The approach used in this study is based on a comprehensive literature review on the subject of metaverse applications and their potential future in the gaming and entertainment industries. This chapter also discusses the various opportunities for the metaverse in the near future, as well as the challenges involved with it, such as privacy, security, and inclusivity.
