Abstract
Research has shown that the insurance industry is built on the trust and faith of clientele, and ethical behavior becomes a key component of doing business. Wildfires, hurricanes, and rising fraudulent claims increase the pressure on executives in the general insurance industry to continue to report positive earnings. Religion plays a large role in shaping the values of individuals. The authors sought to determine if religion played a role in the decisions of insurance industry employees. Findings from a survey sent to insurance industry practitioners in Alberta did not support this supposition. However, age was a factor with those above the age of 55 showing higher levels of ethical behavior. The authors argue that those over the age of 55 have religious beliefs more ingrained in their behaviour and thus played a significant role in their decision making. However, more research must be undertaken to explore the role of religion in decision-making.
