Abstract

The chapter presents the results of the study related to the solid waste landfill resource management models used in various regions of the world. Studied parameters include usage of land, collection and utilization of landfill gas and control of landfill's negative impact on the environment. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that all over the world, solid waste landfills are among the largest environmental polluters; they have a negative impact not only on the condition of the ground water and surface water and soils of adjacent territories, but also on the efficiency of use of land resources in the region. The authors consider technological and organizational innovations that contribute to this optimization of solid waste landfill management. The drivers of these innovations are both changes in legislation and technologies that are proven, effective from an economic, environmental and social point of view, and available to the landfill staff. Another important factor is the availability of up-to-date and reliable information about all types of resources involved in the operation process. The suggestions developed by the authors make it possible to take into account the dynamics of investments, as well as the inequality of costs and results carried out and received in different periods of time. The results are of interest both to the solid waste landfill staff and to regional and local authorities, as well as to investors and specialists involved in the development of regional waste management infrastructure.
