Abstract
Carbonaceous materials (CMTs) have applications across diverse fields, from medical to food industry; their most pivotal use lies in wastewater treatment and purification through tertiary processes, particularly through adsorption, which is the process where liquids, gasses, or dissolved molecules will adhere to the surface of the solid material through either weak or strong intermolecular forces. Adsorption processes are versatile since they can be performed in batch or continuous regime and have been used to purify water that has been polluted with a wide variety of contaminants, such as dyes, pesticides, phenolic compounds, among many others. The aim of this chapter is to explore the different schools of mathematical modeling in adsorption systems both in batch and continuous regime as well as the benefits it provides in the large-scale removal of pollutants in aqueous phase using both traditional and novel carbonaceous materials.
