Abstract

This chapter emphasizes the important alternative presented by Cuban cooperation within a South-South framework to development challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. This chapter discusses Cuba's development cooperation framework, rooted in notions of solidarity, South-South collaboration, and magnanimous health and education assistance aimed at promoting access to socioeconomic human rights. Grounded by Cuba's historical collaboration in Sub-Saharan Africa and emphasizing its contribution to development in the Indo-Pacific in the modern day, the chapter explores Cuba's cooperation experience in Asia and Oceania, showcasing diverse and longstanding collaborations in health assistance and professional training. The conclusion additionally draws attention to the potential for triangular cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and important challenges. Despite not being a traditional approach, the chapter highlights the relevance of considering Cuba as an extra-regional actor with valuable experiences to contribute to the evolving dynamics in the Indo-Pacific space.
