Abstract

The pandemic of gender-based violence which does not seem to be curable continues to linger. Girls and women in Africa continue to experience gender-based violence in many folds including rape. In Africa, culture and religion remain major players in exacerbating the situation. Even in the church, the Bible is used as a tool to foster abuse. The chapter is an Afrocentric reflection on the biblical account of the rape case of Tamar in 2 Samuel 13. Tamar's story mirrors the realities of African girls and women who are victims of rape. Tamar's resistance gives African girls and women a voice to protest and not shield perpetrators. African cultures and the Bible are proposed as interventions for dealing with gender-based violence. A contextual, womanist, masculine, and intercultural reading of the Tamar story will enhance better ways of dealing with violence, especially in the church context. The story is analyzed through the Afrocentric-Gender Paradigm lens.
