Abstract

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are those acute or chronic experiences that threaten a child's physical and emotional health and well-being. This chapter has three primary goals aimed to improve outcomes for school aged children who experience ACES. The first goal is to provide an evidenced based background and definition of ACEs. An in-depth exploration of the current literature will help readers understand the need for protective factors and mitigating strategies. The second goal of this chapter is to provide an explanation of both within the context of school based and classroom-based environments. Finally, the chapter reviews collaborative based practices that can exist across settings.
