Abstract
During the 2019-2020 school year, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in schools across the globe transitioning from traditional, in-person instruction to virtual instruction. Students received instruction from home as teachers scrambled to replicate content, pedagogy, and community in a new platform. With technology as the centerpiece of instruction, can authentic, real-world learning occur online? This chapter will discuss the process and execution of virtual instruction of a music class during the COVID-19 pandemic through three main concepts: connecting Etienne Wenger's communities of practice, analyzing student learning through the four main learning styles, and looking at the constructivist teaching model and its impact on the virtual music class. The results show a positive virtual class environment with high levels of student learning and engagement.
