Abstract

Online course experiences of undergraduate students continue to grow due to both a pre- and mid-COVID-19 pandemic increase in online courses offered and taken at universities. In this study, students identified the benefits and challenges of an online course format and their online learning needs for achievement of learning objectives. While the majority of the students in this study had previous online course experiences, they were not confident in their ability to reach learning objectives in that course format. Students identified a lack of specific digital and life skills as well as instructor issues with communication and organization of online course content as their primary concerns. Suggested improvement of practices based on findings include: a focus on assessment and development of the digital literacy and life skills of students, clear communication of course requirements while ensuring students' realistic understanding of course commitments, and professional development opportunities for instructors that are closely reflective of students' online learning needs.
