Abstract
The human body's overproduction of free radicals can throw things out of balance and destroy the macromolecules like proteins, DNA, and lipids through oxidative damage. This damage is responsible for the pathogenesis of several human diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and aging. Antioxidant phytochemicals can therefore be crucial in the management and prevention of chronic illnesses. Studies on humans and in vitro have shown that phytochemicals possess antioxidant properties. Many phytochemicals, especially polyphenols such anthocyanins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and tannins, are known to have antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties. This chapter summarizes the phytochemical and antioxidant activity of the red coloured fruits such as grapes (Vitis vinifera), red guava (Psidium guajava), and watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), and this review highlights the recent progress on antioxidant phytochemicals, potential mechanisms in the prevention and treatment of cancer.
