Abstract
Urbanization is one of the fast paced and prominent phenomena of 21st century promising enhanced quality of life. However looking at environmental, physical, mental and social costs, drawbacks certainly outweigh the benefits. Leading body of psycho-environmental research report that urbanization leads to physical, social, economic as well as environmental changes which are all interrelated and impact overall well-being of residents. Effects of urbanization clubbed with low socio-economic living conditions may lead to deterioration of physical and mental health.On the same line of thought the authors propose application of bio-psycho-social theory to understand the impact of urbanization on mental health along with Precaution adoption process model of health psychology to uncover the causes for apathy and irresponsible behaviors of citizens towards environment. The authors also recommend application of the social-cognitive learning theory Bandura and sustainable and environmental architecture practices.
