Abstract

This chapter addresses the South African government's commitment to inclusive education policies, aiming to rectify historical inequalities. Since 1994, education policy aligns with constitutional principles, emphasizing education as a human right, equality, equity, choice, curriculum entitlement, and the rights of persons with disabilities. The shift from a medical model to a rights and social model approach reflects a commitment to removing barriers for higher education participation. Despite progress, students with disabilities still face obstacles, leading to exclusion. This chapter focuses on best inclusion practices for students with disabilities in both contact and open distance e-learning (ODeL) higher education institutions. It explores the implementation of an inclusive education system, grounded in a social model of disability, to meet the diverse needs of all students.
