Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to examine the global shortage of truck operators, highlighting its economic, social, and labor implications. It first explores how world population growth influences economic expansion and transportation demand. The critical role of truck drivers in the logistics and their impact on global transportation revenues are emphasized, along with challenges such as inadequate pay, poor working conditions, and limited hours. The study also addresses the reluctance of youth and women to enter the profession due to perceived hazards and systemic labor market barriers. Additionally, it links the shortage of truck operators to Sustainable Development Goal 8, focusing on economic growth, employment, entrepreneurship, and occupational safety, and investigates the relationship between the Logistics Performance Index and per capita GDP.
