Abstract

This chapter reflects on an innovative design studio at Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland that unites architecture and cinema under the umbrella of design through cinematic analysis methods and filmmaking practices. By embracing film analysis and filmmaking as design and learning tools, CineArch studio focuses on questioning and redefining the boundaries of architectural creativity and spatial design. The fusion of cinematic analysis methods and architectural design processes takes a central role in the studio. Students explore methods such as storyboard, montage/collage, cinematic plan/model, poster, and moodPaint to analyse film scenes but also to design buildings, structures, and film sets. In parallel, filmmaking practices, such as concept film, site film, city film, model film, animation as well as AR/VR, are utilised to test and articulate architectural ideas through dynamic audio-visual means. The spatial outcomes of this multidisciplinary collaboration are a series of atmospheric and experiential projects that exceed conventional architectural boundaries.
