Abstract
This study aims to examine the active learning strategy applied in the first-semester design studio, the 2023-2024 fall semester, in the Department of Architecture at Özyeğin University in Türkiye. The ÖzU Case differed from traditional basic design pedagogy, where the design problem is divided into its components and the basic elements and principles of design are discussed through a part-to-whole approach. Methodologically based on a case study analysis, the examination dwells on the following themes: (1) Student engagement in learning process, (2) cooperative learning, (3) role of the tutor, (4) multiplicity of teaching and learning activities, and (5) flexibility and adaptability of space. The study revealed that the active learning strategy enabled ARCH 101 Design students to grasp a holistic approach to design and develop ways of seeing with the mind's eyes, through the integration of the learning by experiencing and learning by doing activities.
