Abstract
The world of intellectual property (IP) is a complex and evolving landscape, essential for safeguarding innovations from basic science. Basic science, involving long-term, high-risk research, is crucial for breakthroughs in fields like medicine, engineering, and computing. In today's competitive market, protecting and commercializing these innovations is vital. IP rights, such as patents, copyrights, and trademarks, offer legal protection, incentivizing further research and development. However, navigating the IP landscape is challenging due to varied laws and regulations. Digital technologies and global collaborations add complexities, necessitating new IP strategies. This chapter explores key IP concepts, the significance of patents, copyrights, and trademarks, and addresses international laws and ethical considerations. It also provides case studies and discusses future IP trends and developments.
