Abstract

This study examines the transformative influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on library and information science (LIS) within higher education institutions in India. As technology evolves, libraries are increasingly adopting AI applications to enhance efficiency, user experiences, and information management. Automation of routine tasks, improved search and discovery mechanisms, and optimized collection management are reshaping traditional library practices. AI-driven chatbots and virtual assistants provide instant user support, while text and data mining techniques enable advanced research and trend identification. Learning analytics contribute to understanding user behavior, informing tailored interventions to support academic success. The integration of AI also addresses accessibility concerns, enhances cybersecurity, and necessitates continuous professional development for LIS professionals. This study underscores the multifaceted impact of AI on LIS in Indian higher education, pointing towards a future where technology continues to play a central role in shaping information services.
