Harnessing the Power of Generative Artificial Intelligence to Promote Academic Integrity

Abstract

This chapter explores how generative artificial intelligence, which poses a threat to academic integrity, can also be used to address some of the root causes of breaches in academic integrity. The root causes discussed are primarily derived from the largest self-reported academic integrity survey conducted across Australia's leading universities. Some of these root causes that the chapter will address include dissatisfaction with the teaching and learning environment, challenges related to English as an additional language, and the perception of easy access to cheating opportunities. By embracing generative artificial intelligence and incorporating it into the classroom, educators are afforded the opportunity to discuss its acceptable use in assessments and to bring attention to the academic integrity policies and procedures of the institution.
