Abstract

Significant obstacles to agricultural sustainability have resulted from overuse of fossil fuels, soils, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Based on the pyrolysis of organic waste, biochar can improve soil fertility and trap carbon, comparable to the Amazon's nutrient-rich Terra preta soils. That makes it a promising answer. Determining the appropriate quantities and proportions of compost and biochar is necessary to get the optimal plant development conditions. Applying biochar increases the availability of nutrients in the soil, which benefits plant growth characteristics for a variety of crops. Significant increases in foliar nitrogen, above-ground biomass, and root biomass have been seen in long-term field research, which has improved production. When combined with compost and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), biochar has a synergistic impact that improves plant development and increases resistance to diseases like Alternaria solani. Particularly effective in promoting tomato growth and delaying the onset of early blight is this blend. Additionally, the use of biochar additions has shown benefits in terms of enhancing nutrient availability and soil moisture retention, which promotes improved growth for radish, cucumber, lettuce, wheat, and sorghum. In general, current research highlights the significance of customised strategies and in-depth analyses into biochar interactions to maximise its advantages for various crops and soil conditions while encouraging nutrient cycling.
