Abstract

In the past twenty years, Malaysian children have increasingly embraced digital media. Even prior to the pandemic, parental concerns regarding online safety grew alongside rising screen time and internet usage. This chapter delves into the digital resilience of Malaysian youth. Researchers interviewed 20 parents—13 mothers and 7 fathers—who tracked their children's digital device usage for one to three minutes. Parents reported that their children primarily use digital devices for entertainment, communication, learning, schoolwork, and online shopping. From these interviews, five facets of digital resilience surfaced: mental, emotional, social, physical, and spiritual resilience. Video recordings by parents revealed children's familiarity with digital devices, some being overly absorbed by them, even resorting to mobile phone use during meals, neglecting family interaction. This study aims to enhance the digital resilience of Malaysia's younger generation.
