Abstract

Academic failure among tertiary students remains a worldwide phenomenon, yet the extent of these failures and their precipitating factors are not well understood. In Namibia, factors that contribute to the failure rate in the Bachelor of Nursing Science degree are not extensively researched. The objectives of this chapter are thus to assess and describe the factors that contribute to the failure rate in the Bachelor of Nursing Science degree at a Namibian university. This chapter's findings revealed that the poor academic performance of students in the Bachelor of Nursing degree is influenced by personal factors, such as a lack of interest and absenteeism, as well as academic factors, such as inadequate curriculum content, ineffective teaching methods, the rarity of some procedures, and inappropriate attitudes amongst some registered nurses.
