Abstract

The chapter explores the housing system in the United States and the ways in which it denies care. The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of several areas where care is denied with a focus on renters and landlords. Through a review of literature, this chapter reveals issues with the landlord-tenant relationship, roommate troubles, and the oncoming problems for housing presented by climate change. The common theme of these issues is that care is denied to those in the housing system, generally in favor of increasing profit for landlords and third-party companies. Three personal narratives complement the literature and provide an emotional core to the issue of the housing system denying care.
