Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the hospitality industry, prompting the implementation of health and safety measures. This study examines COVID-19 health and safety measures used in South Africa's accommodation sector. Data was obtained from 477 establishments through online surveys. The findings reveal a robust commitment to health and safety practices driven by adherence to regulatory standards. Disparate levels of social distancing measures highlight several challenges in implementation. A strong association with star grading indicates the use of measures tailored to each type of establishment. High-end establishments are more inclined to implement comprehensive measures. Larger facilities use floor marks more frequently, whereas smaller ones rely on personal communication. The number of employees influences the adoption of measures, highlighting the importance of ongoing training and communication on health issues. The study advocates for proactive health practices, customised strategies, financial support mechanisms, and a commitment to long-term preparedness.
