Abstract
This chapter aims to review the limitations encountered in performance evaluation systems, focusing on three main domains: problems with the evaluation methods, the evaluator, and the subordinate. Initially, the chapter discusses the drawbacks inherent in evaluation methods, encompassing both traditional and modern methods, such as checklist method, self-assessment method, essay appraisal method, critical incidents method, ranking method, paired comparison method, management by objectives, behaviorally anchored rating scale and computerized performance monitoring method. This chapter further carries out a comprehensive discussion on the problems related to the evaluator and subordinate while exploring various internal and external factors that influence the performance evaluation process. This chapter therefore contributes to enriching the readers' knowledge, relating to the limitations, factors, and practical aspects of performance evaluation systems, especially where organizations can strive to create fair, transparent, and effective performance evaluation.
