Abstract
This chapter studies the transportation challenges faced by people with disabilities and suggests solutions to the identified challenges. A systematic literature review was adopted and used where a total of 10 research papers were selected for examination. The findings of this research indicate that people with disabilities are faced with transportation challenges such as lack of transport facilities, discrimination and unfair treatment, inept vehicle design, high transport fares, and they are excluded from the process of transport planning when compared to those in developed countries. In view of the findings of this research, it was concluded that people with disabilities are faced with transportation challenges that impede them from having access to various necessities and to exercise their mobility rights. The research recommends investments in transport facilities, implementation of transport subsidy policies, the training of transport personnel, the inclusion of people with disabilities in strategic transport planning, and the removal of import tax for modified vehicles of people with disabilities. The research also recommends future studies to be carried out on transportation solutions for school children and students with disabilities.
