Abstract

Autism is a neurobehavioral syndrome that significantly affects a person's social interaction, communication, and imagination. The term ‘ASD' (autism spectrum disorders) refers to a group of neurodevelopmental disorders and is used to encompass and merge certain diagnoses. Disorders within this spectrum can be characterized as a continuum of ability levels that extends from mental retardation to intellectual intelligence. Moreover, they manifest themselves early in a person's life and profoundly affect the perception of oneself and the world, learning and adaptation to the demands of everyday life. This chapter aims to understand the nature of neurocognitive deficits in ASD with an emphasis on how this can influence the formulation of treatment goals at an educational and clinical level. It focuses on the definition of ASD and their description presenting the neurocognitive deficits and their behavioral manifestation, as well as the resulting goals.
